Italy's classic comic theater, the commedia dell' arte, remains legendary for its combination of virtuoso clowning and high-energy storytelling. Goosefeathers, a new musical in the commedia style, delivers everything you'd expect from the commedia: clever disguises, terrible puns, a frantic farcical plot and a hearty laugh for the whole family. In an inventive twist that adds a dash of theatrical brio to the performance, all seven roles in Goosefeathers are played by two actors - and the offstage costume changes are often every bit as dramatic as the onstage scenes.
When old man Zanni orders his bungling servant, Arlecchino, to make preparations for a fancy banquet, you can be sure that pandemonium will be on the menu. Arlecchino turns to his clever fellow-servant Pedrolino for help, and the two cook up a scheme that turns into a recipe for disaster. Before dinner is served, Arlecchino loses his heart to the gooseseller, Columbina, Pedrolino nearly loses his head to the hot-tempered Captain Braggadocio, and the hapless pair have to munch their way through a gaggle of geese. Goosefeathers is an unforgettable comic feast, garnished with a generous helping of deliciously clever musical numbers.
Goosefeathers was commissioned by the Rehoboth Summer Children's Theater of Rehoboth Beach, DE, and has also been performed in Pennsylvania as part of Duet Productions' Winter Family Theater Festival. Its blend of broad comedy and sophisticated songwriting makes it a hit for the whole family.
